Day 1 of Sailing at BTR

Posted: 23/6/2022

    BTR Day One Roundup.

Looking out on the water this morning thoughts were more sunscreen than spinnakers but in any case classes set off on a slow start on day one of the much anticipated Bangor Town Regatta. The event fell victim to COVID and Director Gavin Watson breathed a sigh of relief as the warning signals sounded.

In his pre- event interview on the BTR website he noted: ”We are delighted with the overall entry list, and we wish to use this return to sailing as a foundation to build Bangor Town Regatta for the future”.

As the afternoon settled in a welcome breeze from the South 12-15 Kt turned a potential drifting match into a proper race.

Principal Race Officer Con Murphy and his team managed to achieve 2  races except for classes 3, 4 and 5 whose 2nd race was abandoned due to the light morning winds.

There were no class 1 starters.

The race officer on Course 2 was Michael Tyrell who did a good job with his team shifting marks through 90 degrees. Beat into Ballyholme Bay, long spinnaker leg to Cloughan Jetty, beat back to No 1 and short fetch to the RUYC finish in a good 12-15 knot breeze.
